Thaddeus Metz
In “Toward an African Moral Story” Thaddeus Metz talks about the difference between African culture and western culture. One of the main things that stood out to me was his explanation about how each culture has such big differences in ethics and morals.
Metz talks about how the western culture and how that is most familiar to us. He then goes on to talk about the African culture and how it differs from western culture. In western culture, it is believed for everyone gets to “keep what they earn”. This means that if you work for it and obtain it, you, morally, get to keep it all to yourself. However, in the African culture it is a bit differnt. Morally, it is said, in their culture, to share with those who are in need or whom do not have the privilege that ones self might have. They are to share with those who are in need. He gave an example about the cows and this really helped me understand it. He talked about how if you had two cows, both that produce milk, and your family is fully satisfied with only one cows milk, you shall give the second cows milk to those on need. This is how he described the African culture. The western culture is more, in other terms, greedy. Although the western culture may seem more harsh, it is still part of their culture.PHI
